Stratocruiser BOAC

The B29 Superfortress donated the wings, engines and tail to be fitted to a brand new fuselage to produce the ground breaking Stratocruiser. Pan Am showed interest in the new aircraft, with a change of the original engines to Pratt and Whitney Wasp Major radial engines, developing 3500 hp. Featuring a lower deck bar and lounge, accessed by a spiral staircase from the main decks of the double bubble fuselage. This was a complex and expensive aircraft, which may have led to their only being 56 built. BOAC took delivery of 17, six from Boeing, the remainder from other airlines and in December 1949 began transatlantic services.
